National Honor Society

Anderson High School National Honor Society
Membership Requirements

A prospective student must have favorable standing as a junior or senior and have a cumulative 3.5000 GPA at the end of their sophomore or junior year. The GPA is not rounded in any way. National Honor Society candidates must also have been students at Anderson for the previous full school year, and must be on the recommended high school graduation plan. The GPA is only computed in June; credits earned in the summer do not count toward the current cumulative GPA.
In addition, a student must have acceptable ratings on the National Honor Society Candidate and Student Activity Information Form, where eligible NHS candidates list all leadership positions, extracurricular activities, community service participation, and job/work experiences.

Students also must receive favorable teacher recommendations indicating high standards of leadership and character. These standards include "demonstrating the highest standards of honesty and reliability," "observing instructions and rules, both inside and outside of the classroom," and "avoiding cheating." (from the National Honor Society Handbook)

Announcements were made at Anderson every day from September 20th-21st and September 24th-25th, for junior and senior students to check the list of student ID numbers outside of room 200, to see if they were on the list of eligible candidates for the Anderson chapter of the National Honor Society. Those students who were eligible for membership by having a 3.5000 cumulative GPA or higher were asked to pick up and complete the National Honor Society Candidate and Student Activity Information Form on September 20th-21st, or September 24th-25th in room 200. (If your son/daughter had a cumulative GPA of 3.5000 or higher and did not receive their NHS invitation to complete the NHS Candidate and Student Activity Information Form, they either were not listening to the announcements made 4+ consecutive school days, or were absent from school. Please have them see Mrs. Girardot in room 200 ASAP.) The completed forms are due to Mrs. Girardot, NHS Adviser, in room 200 no later than Monday, October 1st, 2012 at 4:30 pm. Teacher recommendations will be requested by the NHS Adviser directly from the Anderson faculty; all teachers will be asked to evaluate all NHS candidates they have taught. The final membership selection is made by a five member faculty committee, appointed by the principal. The NHS Advisers are not voting members of the faculty committee.

Candidates who complete and turn in the National Honor Society Candidate and Student Activity Information Form by the due date of 4:30 pm on October 1st, 2012 will receive a letter notifying them of their status by October 19th, 2012. New members are inducted into our chapter in the fall of each year. The Induction Ceremony for this year will be held on Friday evening, October 26th, 2012 in the Anderson High School Performing Arts Center (the Theatre) at 6:00 pm, followed by a reception in the cafeteria. (The varsity football team plays Thursday night, October 25th, of this week.) New members will be asked to arrive and meet in the cafeteria at 5:30 pm, and are asked to wear nice attire (dresses or nice skirts/blouses for ladies, jacket and dress pants or dress shirts, tie, and dress slacks for the men). Parents are invited to join us for this special NHS Induction Ceremony at 6:00 pm, followed by a reception. Juniors and seniors selected for membership by the five member NHS Faculty Council do NOT become official NHS members until the Induction Ceremony.

All NHS members must maintain a 3.5000 cumulative GPA, complete NHS volunteer service requirements, and maintain the high standards of leadership and character that were used as the basis for their selection. All members are expected to earn at least 10 hours of NHS approved community service per semester AND must attend all monthly NHS meetings. (New members will only need to earn 5 hours for this Fall semester, as they become members partway through the semester.) All NHS members must earn at least 2 hours through tutoring (blue points), and at least 2 hours through Anderson NHS sponsored and approved service events in the community that benefit needy organizations (gold points). Parents are invited to attend community service events and help as chaperones or with carpools. Seniors who maintain the required service points and GPA receive honors recognition at graduation by wearing a NHS medallion. NHS offers peer tutoring, after school tutoring, and Saturday School tutoring, and performs many community service projects, including nursing home visits, the Souper Bowl of Caring, Capital Area Food Bank food sorting and processing, the Settlement Home Garage Sale, Coats for Kids, Bull Creek Park clean-up days, numerous walk-a-thons, and the annual State School Holiday Party.

Dues for new members are $20, and will be collected in room 200 after October 19th, or at the October 26th Induction Ceremony. Dues for returning senior members are $10. Meetings for this year will be on September 5th and October 3rd (returning senior NHS members only), November 7th, December 5th, January 9th, February 6th, March 6th, April 3rd, & May 1st. All meetings for this year will be on Wednesdays from 4:20-4:50 in the cafeteria. All seniors must earn all required service points and submit full documentation to Mrs. Girardot in room 200 no later than the April 3rd meeting, in order to have their name placed in the graduation program as NHS members and receive their NHS medallion. NHS Honor Medallions will be given to members who have completed all NHS service and scholarship requirements in May.
